When you think of a waiter you may think of him dressed with a traditional or casual attire, you may think of his polite smile accompanied by a certain elegance and discreet and refined gestures …well in another words, you may think of a completely ‘standard” waiter. This is because you may have never met some of the following waiters…
So just to relax and have fun…before giving back to our favorite traditional waiters their apron and their smile that we appreciate so much..let’s observe this strange carnival…
The most animal ones
Monkey waiters
This is a Japanese invention. These monkeys are able to serve drinks and bring hot towels to the customers. Apparently animal rights regulations mean the premises have been visited to ensure the creatures are not being mistreated. One last advice if you go there: it is not because they are monkey that you can forget the tip (choose between peanuts or soya beans)!
Restaurant: Kaoru Otsuka sake house, north of Tokyo, Japan.
Elephant waiters
Another style but same principle…Its name is Game and it lives in a Thai winery. According to its owner, Game has amazing trunk control and enjoys serving wine to the customers.
Place: The Siam Winery in the central plains of Thailand
The most high tech ones
Robots waiters
They are serving without smile but they are serving. The robots of that Thai restaurant can bring you your dinner efficiently but the good news are that they cannot handle all the tasks…even if they can also dance!
Besides, apparently we will still have to wait for the time where we could be served by E.T and his friends…
Restaurant: Hajime Robot Restaurant, Bangkok
No waiter
They are said to be the restaurants of the future. Everything is automated, from choosing your menu on a computer to getting it directly without having to get up from your chair.
Restaurant: Inamo, London, UK.
The ‘’younger’’ ones
‘’Disavantaged’’ youths
This is a great initiative from a Vietnamese association. KOTO is a not-for-profit restaurant and vocational training program that is changing the lives of street and disadvantaged youth in Vietnam.
Restaurant: KOTO, Hanoi, Vietnam
Children
Kinderkookkafe, in Amsterdan offers the children the possibility to do things that usually only adults do: cook, serve, write the menu etc… and even be at the checkout counter (depending on their age).
Restaurant: Kinderkookkafe, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Characters
Maid waitresses
It’s a phenomenon in Japan (with 217 maid cafes in the country). Those restaurants lean on the Japanese media and fetish culture. In maid cafes, waitresses call the customers ‘’Lord’’ or ‘’Master’’ and they also sing and dance.
Restaurant: more than 217 places in Japan.
Ninja waiters
For those who don’t want to eat ‘’in peace’’, Ninja waiters can bring you some action: they drop down from the ceiling and do Ninja-like before presenting you the menu. You will also sit in a Ninja village and have to go through dangerous passages before sitting at your table.
Restaurant: Ninja restaurant in Tokyo but also in New York
Nurses waitresses
It is known that people like pretty nurses. Thus, if you are not afraid of hospitals, hospitals-themed restaurants can offer you a one of a kind experience.
In those special restaurants/hospitals places, nurses waitresses serve the food in flasks and operating-room’s dishes.
Note: in Arizona, national nursing group has repeatedly asked the owner of one restaurant of that kind to stop using the outfits.
Restaurants: Hospitalis, Riga, Latvia or Heart Attack Grill, Temp (Arizona), USA.
Families
Twins couples
This is a funny story that made some noise in China a few years ago when customers of a small restaurant started wondering how it was possible to see the same waiters 21 hours a day, without intermission. Locals had even nicknamed the place the “robot couple restaurant”. And this how China discovered the owners of that restaurant: two couples … both the men and women are identical twins!
Restaurant: somewhere…in China
After discovering all that very strange waiters, the main question for us could be: will there ever be a monkey waiters race or a robot waiters race??
